Welcome to Corse

Pat Lewis - Council Chairman - Calor Villager of the Year 2005

My name is Pat Lewis, and I am your Parish Council Chairman.

Corse has a population of 565 (mid 2001 Parish Population estimate.) It is a rural, open, scattered village, stretching from the Worcestershire Border at Corse Lawn and Eldersfield, to the Gloucestershire neighbouring villages of Staunton, Hasfield, Ashleworth, Tirley and Hartpury.

We are lucky to have excellent assets in our Parish, serving a much wider community, with many active social groups, clubs and societies.

At the heart of Corse, the Church of England School is newly built providing the children of Corse and neighbouring Staunton with the very best start in life. Our Village Hall is one of the largest around, and has recently undergone a £125,000 redevelopment to fully modernise it for our needs today, and is sited with a large and well used Playing Fields on the Southern edge of the village centre.

Within Corse, we also have a newly built Doctors Surgery which serves many thousands of people in a large catchment area between the other surgeries of Ledbury, Tewkesbury and Newent. The Prince of Wales public house, which is very distinctive as the old Chartist School, has been adopted as a 'logo' on our Parish signs.

Field

Besides the predominant Farms and Agricultural businesses, we have Cross Hands and Corse Garages, a thriving bakery at St Georges, the Countryside Day Nursery, Treona Nurseries and Sinclair Optical Sevices. We have two Rural Industrial Units at Seymours Farm in Oridge Street, and at the Hawthorns, Pillows Green, Corse.

St Margarets Church is a delightful small rural Church set among the Apple Orchards on the Southern edge of the Parish.

The last Parish Council elections were in May 2003, and we have a full compliment of seven Councillors, each with specialist responsibility for a different area of interest. We are funded by the Parish Precept, which is collected as part of the Council Tax or Rates, and in 2003/4 we have one of the lowest Precepts in the Forest of Dean District (fdean.gov.uk) at £7.97 (band D) on 240 properties. (Staunton £12.51 Hartpury £10.59) For the Millennium year we gave every household a years 'holiday' from this charge, and planted some trees in the centre of the village.

The Parish Council own the Parish Pound, which is today a fabricated steel shed at Snig's End, and provides us with significant additional rental income.

Individual donations towards worthy causes are always welcome.

Finally, you may have noticed our village signs, "Welcome to our village". This is part of the Parish Councils recent efforts to reinforce Corse as an identity, along with recognising Corse as a postal address.

I am always available, with my councillors to listen to your needs, no query too trivial. Your Council meet alternate months and all Parishioners are always welcome. All relevant matters are posted to the Parish notice board, which can be found inside the bus shelter,

Happy Viewing
